Bob Turner founded Bob's Crane Service in 1983. Turner first started his company as a sole owner/operator when he purchased a used Bucyrus Erie 12-ton crane. Prior to going into business for himself Bob had worked in the construction business for a number of years. During this time he went through Operating Engineer's Local 12 Apprenticeship Program, learning to operate a wide range of heavy equipment from dozers to cranes. Finally Bob took a chance, purchased his first crane and started his business. The very day he signed the papers for that first crane, he found work on the Interstate 8 and 67 interchange, a job which lasted nearly a year and a half.
While the beginning of the 90's saw a downturn in construction and the closure of several crane companies, it was the beginning of an upturn for Bob's Crane Service. Bob's company was small and did not have the large inventory that the other companies had, and he was able to weather the tough times. In fact, he was able to purchase several used cranes at auctions as other companies were going through transitions.
At this same time, Bob was beginning to add staff to his business which had primarily been an operation run by himself. He also started to shift the focus of the business from moving trees to construction projects. The company has now done extensive bridgework as well as work on freeways. Among the many projects Bob's Crane Service has been involved with include several projects on Interstate 15, work at San Diego's new Petco Park, surrounding hotels, and work in San Diego's famed Gaslamp District.
The company that started with a single used crane now has an impressive inventory of 20 cranes ranging from 5-ton to 200-ton.
Bob is the first to admit that the people working for him and satisfied customers have made the Company the success it is today.
